AFS attended a block of flats in Blaby after rats chewed through a flexible toilet pan connector, leaving the property at risk of leakage and foul odours.
What we found
The incident happened over the Christmas period, when reduced waste collections had led to overflowing communal bins nearby. That may have contributed to increased rodent activity, although the exact route could not be confirmed.
What AFS did
The damaged connector was removed and replaced. A McAlpine ARB-1 anti-cross-flow and rodent barrier was then fitted behind the new connection to reduce the risk of the same problem recurring.
Useful guidance
Where rodents are suspected around ground-floor bathrooms, the visible damage should be repaired quickly and the soil-pipe connection assessed for appropriate additional protection.
