AFS attended Long Lane Surgery in Coalville on an emergency same-day call-out after a toilet and nearby basin stopped clearing correctly.
What we found
Plunging did not improve either fitting, which showed that this was not a simple blockage local to the toilet. Because both fixtures were affected, we checked the shared waste system and found that the air-admittance valve, often called a Durgo valve, was not operating correctly.
What AFS did
We removed the failed air-admittance valve, fitted a suitable replacement and tested the toilet and basin. Normal drainage was restored during the same visit without unnecessary drain jetting.
Useful guidance
If a toilet and a nearby basin both drain poorly, gurgle or appear blocked, repeated plunging may not solve the fault. A plumber should check the shared waste pipework and ventilation, including any air-admittance valve, before more disruptive work is considered.
