Running toilet cistern rebuilt after a high water bill in Broughton Astley

A Broughton Astley customer contacted AFS after a toilet kept running into the internal overflow and contributed to a high water bill.

What we found

The plumbing fault

The cistern was failing to shut off correctly, so water continued to pass into the toilet. We explained that replacing the worn washer was the lower-cost repair option, while renewing the internal mechanisms would give the customer new working fill and flush valves.

What AFS did

Diagnosis and repair

The customer chose the more comprehensive option. We removed the old cistern components and installed a new fill valve and flush valve, effectively rebuilding the working parts inside the cistern. The water level and overflow were set correctly before the toilet was flushed repeatedly and checked for leaks and continued water loss.

Useful guidance

What to watch for

A running toilet can waste metered water continuously without leaving water on the floor. The most suitable repair depends on the age and condition of the internal parts: sometimes a washer is enough, while replacing worn valves together can reduce the likelihood of another cistern fault soon afterwards.
